Abstract | This round table discussion will address the attitudes, realities, and challenges to medievalists raising families while pursuing a career in academia. With the uncertainty of the current economic climate and shifting academic hiring practices, balancing the needs of work and family presents new difficulties for junior scholars hoping to establish themselves professionally. Our speakers will address some of the current obstacles and solutions to accommodating family in academia, from completing the dissertation while raising children, to researching abroad, single parenting, career advancement, family-friendly conference accommodations, persistent gender-roles and expectations for both sexes, and the challenge of the job search. Participants include Ilya Afanasyev (University of Oxford), Kimm Curran (University of London), Jane Gilbert (University College London), Catherine Holmes (University of Oxford), Zoë Opačić (Birkbeck, University of London), Amanda Power (University of Sheffield). |
