Abstract

Following the 2014 IMC focus of 'Empire', this round table discussion considers the exclusivity of academic research. We will discuss the boundaries between academic work and public engagement, as well as the division between academic and academic-related jobs. Can we re-think the strict delineation between 'research' and 'impact'? What are our professional options outside of the university? What are the challenges inherent in the 'transgression' of the norms of academic research? What is the role of social media in communicating our research? How can we support academics working both within and outside the university?

Participants include Duncan Berryman (Queen's University Belfast), Isabella Bolognese (University of Leeds), Melanie Brunner (University of Leeds), Catherine A. M. Clarke (University of Southampton), Johanna Green (University of Glasgow), and Hana Videen (King's College London).
