Abstract

In the landscape of late 13th-century / early 14th-century Middle Dutch mystical literature, the poem cycle by the anonymous author known as Pseudo-Hadewijch occupies an important but hitherto undervalued place. This session explores various aspects of the mystical theology in these poems. In the 'mystique courtoise' tradition, these poems blend courtly themes such as nobility and mystical themes such as self-abnegation in describing the soul's union with God.
