Abstract

The second session will focus on the role of the church in either Empire. The services of bishops were sought for improving the administration of the realm, while an empire simultaneously provided opportunities for exceptional careers. Frequently, a career in imperial service laid the foundation for a close cooperation between the king/emperor and his dependent servant. Finally, for every interaction with the church it was necessary to make visible that God and his saints favoured the reigning monarch. Such legitimation was not always guaranteed when Church interest were threatened by the monarch. How were these often conflicting expectations reconciled?
