Abstract

It is well known that miracle types travel between saints' lives and that the same motifs appear in multiple lives. This discussion will centre on some of the problems associated with classifying these miracles, including how to define categories, overlapping of topoi and the sheer diversity and size of the corpus of texts. This session will also examine specific cases in which miracle types can be shown to have been directly transmitted from one life to another and to what extent 'universal' miracle types exist. We encourage participants from all disciplines of Medieval Studies to attend.

Participants include Eilidh Harris (University of St Andrews), Jennifer Key (University of St Andrews), Julianne Pigott (University of Cambridge), Maria Teresa Ramandi (University of Cambridge), Joanna Thornborough (University of St Andrews), and Sarah Waidler (University of Cambridge).
