Abstract

This session is the first of three exploring ideas of medieval landscapes and seascapes. It brings together papers reflecting on how the landscape shapes the operation of power and identities, drawing on archaeological and historical sources alongside GIS and 3d visualisation techniques. The papers investigate the links between texts, material culture, and sites in wider landscapes from the Anglo-Saxon period to 13th-century Swansea. They demonstrate that the landscape was dynamic, how it shaped perspective of events and its importance in daily life.
