Abstract

This is one of three sessions conceived under the general theme of 'Exploring 15th-Century Cyprus'.

Not unlike political, religious or economic history, the art history of Lusignan Cyprus (1192-1489) has focused on two relatively well-defined and overall prosperous periods, the 13th and 14th centuries on the one hand, the Venetian period (1489-1571) on the other. Conversely, the century between the Genoese invasion (1373) and the official assumption of power by Venice (1489) has attracted moderate scholarly interest, probably because it is generally thought to have been a turbulent period of political, financial, demographic, and cultural decline. This session's papers will attempt to throw some light on the island's architectural and book production in these troubled years, re-evaluating their contribution to the artistic landscape of the late medieval Mediterranean, which hovered between Late Gothic, Late Byzantine, and the Renaissance.
