Abstract

Our session aims to investigate different perspectives and meanings of the concept of 'Empire' outside the traditional borders and scope of the medieval German Empire. The lectures will focus on three case studies: the Norman narratives and poetry about the Conquest of England; the relationships between Cistercian monks and king Alphonse VII of León-Castile; and the administrative revolution of the Papacy in the late 12th century. These case studies aim to show how these different contexts made use of imperial ideas and the myth of the Roman Empire in order to enforce political legitimacy, territorial consolidation, and ideological self-representation.
