Abstract

Paper -a:
In Hebrew illuminated manuscripts made in Germany in the 13th and 14th centuries we find many symbols of the Holy Roman Empire, as they are mostly portrayed on flags, banners, and other chivalric displays. In the proposed paper, against the background of contemporary textual and artistic evidence, I shall examine the meaning of these portrayals illustrated in Hebrew manuscripts from Ashkenaz. This study will be put into the context of medieval Jewish-Christian relations.
