Abstract

In spite of their seemingly comprehensive nature, most charters are surprisingly imprecise when it comes to the actual descriptions of property or of the actors involved in the exchange. The information these sources contain is hard to capture in a modern database - a problem which is enhanced when a project attempts to combine data obtained through different disciplines, such as archaeology and history. As a consequence especially smaller projects can soon reach their limits regarding the human and technical resources involved. This session presents three projects on the digitisation of data from charters: 'The Making of Charlemagne's Europe', 'Charlemagne's Backyard - Rural society in the Netherlands in the Carolingian Age' and 'The Eastern Alps Revisited'. Combining the experience and results from these projects, the aim of the presenters will be to discuss problems they have encountered, and possible solutions they have found.
