Abstract

Comparing kinship, marriage and status in contested social space across geographical and temporal boundaries, this session will seek common frameworks of decision-making and representation in this key area of social and political life. Geoffrey Humble analyzes the impact of blood and affinal ties in appointments to civil and military office in the early Mongol empire. Maria Cannon explores the balancing of status across step families and children in 15th and 16th century English society.
