Abstract

Jonathan Sumption in his magisterial studies of The Hundred Years War argued for a 'succession of destructive wars, separated by tense intervals of truce and by dishonest and impermanent treaties of peace'. But, the wider literature is still dominated by studies of the major pitched battles such as Crecy, Poitiers, Agincourt, and Castillon, significant but only one manifestation of that war. The Gascon Rolls Project is seeking to foster consideration of the war in different ways, and this session will explore siege warfare, cooperation between allies, and the conduct of diplomacy.
