Abstract

Focussing primarily on the medium of wooden sculpture and wall paintings, this session draws together scholars from three countries to examine a number of themes evident in medieval Scandinavian imagery between the 14th and the 16th centuries. The papers will demonstrate that although works of art were influenced by Scandinavian typological and iconographic trends, northern European influences can also be detected in many cases. Hence trends crossed regional and national borders. The session will also reassess of the role of the workshop, craftspeople, and painters, in particular the Bunge Master, Lars Snickare, and Albertus Pictor.
