Abstract

This round table will explore the theory and practice of empire in a global medieval context, with experts on Latin Europe, Byzantium, the Islamic World, China, and India. What were the parallels and what the historically and culturally contingent aspects of imperial rule? How did ideas and norms of universal lordship manifest themselves in often very distinct contexts of time, space and culture?
