Abstract | Spanning a comprehensive period of time, this session studies the reception of papal legates as well as the work these legates were able to pursue in the composite and changing environment of medieval Europe. Regional actors had their own (sometimes conflicting) agendas when receiving or summoning a legate. How did regional actors and legates interact with each other? Furthermore, the session examines the expectations, customs, and ritual interpretations of receptions of papal legates in order to investigate the extension of papal authority and power. What goals were the legates actually able to pursue successfully (or not)? |
