Abstract

This session focuses on the production of formulae and formulae-manuscripts as witnesses of early medieval culture. It intends to characterise the production of western and eastern scriptoria and determine for what purpose these manuscripts were produced. After an introductory, typological overview, two papers will consider more closely one manuscript and one collection. Clm 19413 is a very interesting manuscript: it contains formulae and texts dealing with grammar and theology. The question is, if it could been considered as a schoolbook. The co-called Collectio Sangallensis contains, among others, formulae for private charters. The third paper will explain content and composition of these charter-formulae by putting them into the context of earlier St Gall formulae collections.
