Abstract | The Montfort family offers a remarkable example of a baronial dynasty that spread across Europe in the 13th century, playing a leading role in key political events like the Albigensian Crusade, Second Barons' War, and destruction of Hohenstaufen Italy. The Montforts' interactions with their contemporary political environment contributed to the unification of modern France, development of the English Parliament, and the establishment of Angevin Sicily. More intimately, the family's piety also provides a unique glimpse into the nature of baronial-ecclesiastical relationships across generations. This session will illustrate the signal importance of the Montforts to the 13th century, while challenging traditional assumptions about the arc and orientation of their story. |
