Abstract

Medieval monasteries forged social and spiritual identities through the acquisition, veneration, and circulation of relics, and the highly variable involvement of Cistercian communities with the cult of saints will be explored, especially in light of their rhetoric towards the social and material world. The history and archaeology of St Servaes in Utrecht provides an opportunity to examine to what extent this abbey conformed to what one expects of Cistercian women's houses. The final paper will consider the work which led to the location and identification of the earthworks of Rievaulx Abbey's grange complex in Castle Bolton in Wensleydale, North Yorkshire.
