Abstract | This session offers three related views of an important medieval Mediterranean city during the later Middle Ages: the city of Lleida in Catalonia. The first paper examines the measures taken by Lleida's authorities to combat the plague, noting that there was a direct relation between dirt and illness and intending to apply a series of hygienic and spiritual measures directly related to medieval medicine. Paper -b addresses the role of Lleida and its citizens during the Interregnum, showing how the city tried to manage the arising violence during this problematic period; and paper -c explores how the church of Lleida functioned during the episcopate of Antoni Cerdà, absentee bishop of Lleida in the 15th century. |
