Abstract

This session aims at presenting various aspects of 'otherness' in Byzantium. The notion of otherness is based on the dichotomy 'we' and the 'others' which can be traced even in the most unsuspected places. This division was applied within the Byzantine society and between Byzantium and other ethnic, religious, and political groups. The three proposed papers aim at analysing some cases of otherness in hagiographic texts, as well as in political ceremonies and practices.
