Abstract

The medieval worldview and conception of reality was far less narrow than it is today. However, this reality often clashed with the theological premises held by the Church. This session will be approaching this subject from three different perspectives. In the first instance, we will look at monstrous human races and the challenges these beings posed to Christian ideals. We will then focus on the gentiles, specifically the Three Magi, and how they were embraced by the Church. Finally, we will consider ideas of Redemption and how the interaction between miraculous beliefs and images turns these objects into something extraordinary for the medieval viewers.
