Abstract

This session will focus on the depiction of Otherness in paintings and sculpted ornaments in castles and churches. It shows intercultural connections between Oriental, Jewish, and Christian cultures in Italy and Spain. This session will focus on the depiction of magic and astrology in Ferrara, as well as on interreligious and intercultural exchanges in Toledo, Valencia, and Florence. Depicted in private spaces, they underline a special link with the exterior space, where the others are living. Therefore, we will show how political, economic, and cultural interrelations influence the question and the construction of the Christian space during the Middle Ages.
