Abstract

From feud to peace-weaving, from the bonds of the war-band to personal and political friendships, many of the roles filled in modern societies by bureaucratic, diplomatic or civil infrastructure were occupied in the Middle Ages by emotional connections. This panel explores the ways in which Medieval European cultures attempted to use emotion and emotional relationships to structure and regulate society and, indeed, to solve social and political problems.
