Abstract

This session considers the political strategy and imagery of Church prelates at the time of the Avignon papacy. Our first paper examines sculpted programmes on portals at Rouen and Lyon cathedrals and the Grand Chapel at the Papal Palace in Avignon. Far more than entertaining caprice, these reliefs document the clergy's intellectual life. John XXII's presence transformed Avignon into a cosmopolitan centre of artistic creation and our second paper examines artistic production during the years of his pontificate. Our final paper discusses Jesuati identity in a large mural once located in their Roman house at SS. Giovanni and Paolo, considering Urban V's determination of the habit.
