Abstract

This session presents new research at three English Heritage sites: Tintagel Castle, Dover Castle, and Furness Abbey. Tintagel Castle has been the focus of a major five-year research project, providing new insights into the castle's early medieval buildings and trading links with the eastern Mediterranean. Recent survey work and investigation at Constable's Gate, Dover Castle, has enhanced understanding of the medieval form and function of the largest medieval castle gatehouse in England. The paper on Roche Abbey discusses the art and architecture of the monastery in the late Middle Ages, with an especial emphasis on death and commemoration.
