Abstract

This session continues our theme on the pontificates of Lucius III (1181-85), Urban III (1185-87), Gregory VIII (1187), and Clement III (1187-91) approaching a decade of papal history which deserves reassessment in the light of recent work on their predecessors. It was a period which saw the emergence of critical issues which affected not only the Papacy but also the whole of Christendom.
