Abstract

The intellectual history of late Byzantium has remained an underexplored area of research, particularly in the field of theology. Dominated from 1339 to 1453 by the thought of St Gregory Palamas and its legacy, the late Palaiologan era is in many ways the age of Palamism. Responding to recent calls to expand the historical scope of Palamite studies, this session seeks to further examine the roots, content, and afterlife of Palamite theology in order to better understand the contributions of late Byzantine theologians and the intellectual history of late Byzantium as a whole.
