Abstract

'Crusader medievalism' - the modern use of crusading rhetoric, imagery, and ideology - is, as other sessions have demonstrated, all around us, forming a part of the contemporary social imaginary. Key scholars of the crusades and their post-medieval receptions will reflect and discuss the advantages and challenges of the concept of crusader medievalism in regards to a) crusade studies and b) modern history, culture, and politics.

Participants include Carole Hillenbrand (University of St Andrews), Mike Horswell (Royal Holloway, University of London), Adam Knobler (Ruhr-Universität Bochum), Jonathan Phillips (Royal Holloway, University of London), and Elizabeth Siberry (Independent Scholar, London).
