Abstract

Enclosure has been since the origins of monasticism a key point of attention and struggle in both regular and non-regulated female religious communities. This session aims to to built a discussion network on enclosure and enclosure processes lived by monastic, mendicant, and non-regulated female communities in medieval Christianity from an interdisciplinary perpective, offering papers connected to normative regulations, archaeological and architectural evidence, political actions, and symbolic and artistic representations about the topic.
