Abstract

Against the background of the overall theme of the IMC 2020 'borders' two interdisciplinary sessions focus on the issue of borders between laity and clergy in the time between the High Middle Ages and the eve of the Reformation: What do borders mean in this social context? How are they crossed and in which way are they stabilized? How are they performed in literature or religious plays? How are they reflected in spirituality and theology? Which role do religious movements and the attempt of late medieval church reform play for blurring the border between laity and clergy?
