Abstract

As academics, we recognise the interest in Medieval Studies of people outside the academy in our public engagement and public outreach, but including non-academics who would like to be involved more actively often receives much less explicit discussion. This session focuses precisely on citizen science and community engagement, with a Mediterranean focus: The first paper presents 'Deciphering Secrets', a crowdsourcing effort to collect and transcribe medieval Spanish manuscripts; the second examines views of Byzantine heritage in present-day Greece; while the third combines an examination of misperceptions of local history with explorations of community efforts to re-present that history.
