Wednesday 7 July 2021, 19.00-20.30

Sponsor:The English Historical Review / Past and Present / Early Medieval Europe
Organiser:Catherine Holmes, Faculty of History, University of Oxford
Moderator/Chair:Catherine Holmes, Faculty of History, University of Oxford
Abstract

This round table discussion will focus on writing for academic journals. The pressure to publish is immense, but what makes for a good journal article? Why publish journal articles? Where to submit? What are the expectations of editors and peer reviewers? How does the revision process work? Why engage in other forms of journal writing, such as book reviews? How can editors encourage and facilitate participation in journal publication by authors from under-represented groups? This round table is intended to be an informal and practical information-sharing session: an opportunity for early career scholars to find out more about publishing with academic periodicals and for editors to listen to authors' concerns. Although the participants are mainly involved with history journals, the themes discussed are likely to be of interest to scholars in other disciplines.

Participants include editors Julia Steuart Barrow (Northern History), Hannah Skoda (The English Historical Review), and Alexandra Walsham (Past and Present).
