Abstract

This strand of three sessions will examine various aspects of Anglo-Scottish relations from the 13th to the 16th centuries, discussing how interactions between Englishmen and Scots, and their perceptions of each other, were shaped by a period of peaceful co-existence followed by intermittent but persistent hostilities. The second session will examine aspects of Anglo-Scottish warfare, politics and diplomacy in the 14th century, with papers discussing the role played by Reading Abbey in Edward I's relations with John Balliol; Anglo-Scottish relations and Scottish government in the brief period of peace during the minority of David II; and a proposal for Anglo-Scottish military co-operation during the truce of the 1360s.
