Abstract | The three papers in this session discuss different aspects of activity in medieval religious houses. The first paper considers the place of miracles and medical practice within the monastic community, examining accounts of healing, as found in miracle collections, and the practice of procedures such as phlebotomy. Paper two will examine some of the more unusual sketches and marginal additions found in manuscripts produced in monastic houses of England and Wales, and consider what this might reveal about the readers of these texts and the communities responsible for maintaining them. Paper 3 will explore the regional nature of the material in the reference book of Thomas Ashby, canon of Bridlington Priory, including his interest in specific saints. |
