Abstract

During the Middle Ages many churches throughout Europe - as early as the 10th century - practiced the so-called Depositio Crucis, a ceremony during which the burial of Christ was reenacted through the placement of a crucifix or a host into a 'sepulcher'. Later, and that was probably related to changes in spirituality and the development of Christocentric devotion, some churches replaced the cross/host with a gisant of the dead Christ or with an articulated Christ that was removed from a crucifix. In this session, such practices from various regions - namely Catalonia, Poland, and Scandinavia - will be presented and discussed.
