Abstract

The first of two sessions examining medieval Iceland, a society late to industrialise and which continued to be viewed as medieval beyond what is conventionally considered medieval. These sessions are well placed within the IMC 2021 theme by exploring the placement of Iceland in the wider North Atlantic ideological, social, and economic climates. The three papers in this session use documentary evidence to examine the role of the Church, the Law, and paper trading within these climates of exchange.
