Abstract

The relationship between gender and heresy has been discussed since the Middle Ages themselves. While the idea that women were inherently attracted to religious dissent has been abandoned, a more systematic approach to the importance and roles of men and women remains rare. Similarly, while we know that social status and occupation could promote involvement in dissent and influence the handling of suspects by inquisitors, analyses of these issues have drawn only from a small portion of the extant sources. This session seeks to build upon these foundations to explore the dynamic interactions that took place, in relation to religious dissent, between and within genders, occupations, and social strata of medieval society.
