Abstract

This panel explores a series of intertwining themes that grew out of the extraordinary impact of the so-called legend of Prester John and later medieval European efforts to document and create knowledge about the East, particularly through the lenses of salvation history, the Crusades, and eschatological concerns. This session brings together three papers that explore both the genesis and the long-term consequences of this way of understanding the significance of Asia from a variety of historical perspectives and time periods, from the 12th century through Columbus's voyages.
