Abstract

Since the 19th century, the Middle Ages have had a great academic and social prominence. In the context of nation-states, they served to build national identities. However, without this reference, Medieval Studies has lost its relevance in a changing world guided by globalisation. In addition, some disciplines such as archaeology have questioned the methods and objectives of traditional lines of research. Consequently, we wonder what is the current state of medieval historiography; what is the position of Medieval Studies in the academic field; and, finally, what role medievalism can play in the present and future globalised world?

Participants include Jesús Brufal (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona), Hermenegildo Fernandes (Universidade de Lisboa), and Luciano Gallinari (Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, Cagliari).
