Abstract

Chrononormativity is a term coined by Elizabeth Freeman to define 'the use of time to organise individual human bodies towards maximum productivity through particular orchestrations of time'. We see this at work in the parcelling out of history through periodisation and localisation in given spaces. These become boundaries and barriers to a more fluid understanding of the Middle Ages. This round table brings together scholars from different disciplines. Each participant will present 'touch' concerns of today and of the Middle Ages, aiming for a useful anachronistic reading that unveils misuses and misinterpretations of the past, proposing hybrid (hi)stories that affect both our views of the past and our present time.

Participants include Elizabeth Freeman (University of California, Teresa Pilgrim (University of Surrey), Michelle M. Sauer (University of North Dakota), and Sophie Sexon (University of Glasgow).
