Abstract

This panel aims to explore the changing devotional climate of the late Medieval period. This period of religious history has been described as one of 'vitality' (Pfaff) with an increase in the 'devotional elaboration' of lay piety (Duffy). Andrew Judson discusses orthodoxy versus heterodoxy discuss changes in belief and practices around confession. Thor-Oona Pignarre-Altermatt discusses the growth of internalised piety in relation to images of the Virgin of the Annunciation and will examine changes in the practice of prayer and piety within domestic space. Similarly, Philippa Stazicker's paper on Midlands Alabaster Sculptures will highlight how the late medieval period saw changes in use and ownership of religious sculpture in both public and private settings and its effect on devotional practices.
