Abstract

Conveying authority within the medieval world was an essential part of both domestic and inter-ruler politics. Authority and its expression defined one's status socially and otherwise, and was both an expression of the power one wielded, and the power one desired to wield. This panel hopes to examine how authority was expressed in a variety of ways, such as within the treaties that rulers made, within the titles that rulers used, and how gender effected the expression of authority.
