Abstract

Research on manuscripts continues to gain prominence in the field of medieval studies. The third session will focus on the materiality of the manuscript book and the examination of codicological aspects. Arguing that manuscript descriptions should be more than a list of textual contents, Yavuz will discuss physical descriptions of codices and how we can improve our understanding of the artefact through better manuscript cataloguing. McCandless will offer insights into the make-up of a medieval bible through an examination of the codicological features of a fragmentary manuscript in the collection of the Pontifical College Josephinum in Columbus, Ohio. Kapitan will consider codicological aspects of the digital reconstruction of dismembered manuscripts that previously belonged to the royal historiographer of Denmark Thormodus Torfæus (1636-1719).
