Abstract

This session argues that war and warfare were pivotal factors for propelling the dynamics of late medieval social and political change. It focuses on the towns and city-states of the south of the German Empire, that were exposed to the continuous presence of war throughout the late Middle Ages. The papers discuss how the presence of war shaped urban and rural societies, by addressing, first, the military interaction of town and hinterland in the emerging city state, and second, the role of military experts who were exchanged between towns, thus putting urban networks into practice.
