Abstract

The first of the sessions on the materiality of manuscripts is devoted to different aspects of the production of manuscripts. Utilising a corpus of about a hundred manuscripts, Volmering reconsiders the available evidence for Irish practices of manuscript making. Emphasising the simultaneous use of rolls and codices, Armstrong explores why particular formats were preferred for specific record types. Roche reconstructs the complex composition of the extant earliest Norman cartulary roll through an examination of its material features.
