Abstract

The second of a strand on the 'Medieval Papacy, c.500-1500'. This session looks at papal networks with the periphery from the 12th-14th centuries. Paper-a presents a papal network of authority in the north of England during the archiepiscopacy of Thurstan of York (1114-1140). Paper-b explores the local networks and entanglements that the system of delegated papal justice exploited when appointing papal judges-delegate in 12th-century England. Paper-c investigates the networks created when the papacy granted marriage dispensations to Hungarian petitioners in the 13th and 14th centuries.
