Abstract

Many medieval people sought to strengthen their opportunities for improvement, and sometimes solace or even mere survival, by establishing bonds and communities with others of similar status or interests. These bonds of community can also be a means through which status and identity within a community can be enhanced, negotiated – and explored. This session seeks to examine the echoes of such negotiations as preserved in the details of guild affiliations, marriage contracts, and wills.
