Abstract

In accordance to one of the currently existing research programs of the GDR 3177 'Diplomatique', the papers presented at this session will focus on medieval charters and their material aspects in relation to their texts. More precisely, we wish to explore the ways in which size, layout, writing, graphical elements etc. of the documents were used to convey, reinforce, and form the sense the charters carried. These material aspects should therefore be analysed not only as passive recipients or carriers of a textual message, but also as an active part of a whole.
