| Abstract | Pleasure and pain were intertwined in the experience of medieval pilgrims following Christ’s footsteps in the drama of Passion, either in Jerusalem itself or in its transpositions elsewhere. Pilgrimage involved physical hardship, emphatic misery and exaltation, and was carried out through different means. Reproductions of loca sancta architecture and topography, Maps and relics, as well as visual representations in a variety of media were used in order to generate emotionally charged cathartic experiences. Papers in this session will explore the way devout believers used such reproductions of Jerusalem to achieve the benefits of pilgrimage and in turn how such objects, architectural complexes, or visual representations were constructed and staged to create emotional and/or performative encounters with the holy city. |
