Abstract

Major aim of this session is to examine the decline of the Byzantine Empire in the Late Byzantine Period from the perspective of women. Female involvement in power games enabled them to form a picture of the Empires' affairs and its endangered position. In some cases their ideas on the needs, measures and countermeasures did not coincide with male perceptions of imperial power and policies. On the other hand, as the Byzantine Empire gradually declined, it is interesting to detect the consequences for Byzantine women. A case study for discussion offer the female monastic communities from the 13th to the 15th centuries, and their struggle to adapt to the changing realities of their times.
